Description

There are mornings when a single pin holds an entire ceremony together. This bun billai, fashioned in brass and finished to a warm, antique-toned lustre, belongs to the vocabulary of South Indian hair jewellery, where the juda pin has long been as ceremonial as the silk draped below it. Set with colour-rich stones across its face in a close, grid-like formation, the piece draws from a tradition of stone-studded hair ornaments seen in temple jewellery from Nagercoil and the Tamil hinterland. Slender pearl drops hang from the lower edge, their soft ivory weight giving the piece a characteristic gentle sway. At roughly 2 inches tall and 1.95 inches wide (approximately 5 cm by 5 cm), and weighing 18.06 grams, it is substantial enough to anchor a heavy silk bun without slipping. Wear it pressed into a low, oiled knot at a Bharatanatyam arangetram, where it will read cleanly beneath stage lighting. It pairs equally well with a Kanjivaram silk and fresh jasmine at a wedding reception, the pearl drops catching candlelight as the evening deepens. The brass construction ensures a firm pin grip and resists the flex that lighter metals sometimes develop over time. Free size by nature, since a billai rests against the bun rather than encircling a measurement, it suits any hair volume. The finish requires only a soft cloth to maintain its glow.
