Description

There are silhouettes that carry an entire court in their outline. The passa is one of the oldest adornments in the Mughal jewellery lexicon, worn as a side-headpiece that cascades from the hair across the temple. This piece, worked in brass, honours that tradition with the directness of a craftsman who trusts the metal itself. Brass, long favoured in the workshops of Rajasthan and Bengal for its warm, golden depth, takes to detailed pressing and casting with a fidelity that more precious alloys sometimes resist. The form here follows classical passa geometry: a central floral or medallion boss from which pendant drops or chains descend in layered symmetry. At 41 grams, the piece has a satisfying weight, the kind that anchors jewellery and reminds the wearer it is present. The finish retains the antique warmth that distinguishes heritage brass from modern gilt imitation. Wear it at a mehndi or sangeet, threaded into a braided or pinned updo against a silk or tissue gharara. It reads equally well at a festive reception when paired with a handwoven Benarasi saree and a carved gold-tone neckpiece kept deliberately understated. The passa is offered as a free size, fitting the standard adult head with the flexibility typical of chain-secured or clip-finished headpieces. At 41 grams, it is light enough to wear across a long evening without fatigue, and brass requires only a soft cloth to restore its lustre between occasions.
