Description

There are pieces that carry the grammar of a court in every curve. The passa is a head ornament with a history older than most dynasties, worn at the temple or pinned to a parting to trail its pendant weight across the hair. This interpretation, rendered in brass, draws on the Mughal and Rajput traditions of passa-making that flourished in the ateliers of Jaipur and Lucknow, where the asymmetric cascade of a single jewel against dark hair was considered its own kind of poetry. The brass is worked into an intricate flat-set form, its surface detailed with the kind of close filigree and floral patterning that recalls the discipline of a karigar trained in bridal adornment. At 54 grams, the piece carries a presence that registers without becoming burdensome, the weight distributed evenly so it rests rather than pulls. Wear it pinned into a low bun for a wedding mehendi, letting the pendant element fall against the side parting in the manner it was always intended. For a more contemporary reading, secure it into a neat chignon with a silk or tissue-silk saree, where the warm brass tone holds its own against ivory, deep red, or forest green. Free size by nature, a passa accommodates most hair pins and base styles without alteration. The brass finish, unlacquered in character, will develop a subtle warmth with time. A soft cloth is all the care it needs.
