Description

There are maang tikkas that sit on the forehead, and there are those that command it. This piece belongs to the second kind. Worked in brass and set in the Kundan tradition, it presents a central teardrop motif whose silhouette is both architectural and tender, the inverted drop form echoing the geometry that Jaipur's karigars have refined over generations. Kundan setting, as practised across Rajasthan, involves pressing refined metal foil tightly around each stone so that no prong interrupts the face of the glass or gem, creating a surface that reads as continuous light. Here, that technique is applied to a tiered composition that measures five inches in height by 1.1 inches in width (approximately 12.7 cm by 2.8 cm), a proportion generous enough to hold its own against heavy textiles yet shaped to fall gracefully at the centre parting. At sixteen grams, the piece carries the satisfying density of considered metalwork without burdening the wearer. For a wedding reception or a pre-wedding mehendi, pair it with a deep ruby or emerald georgette lehenga and let the brass tones warm against silk. For festive family gatherings, it works equally well above a silk chanderi kurta in ivory or ochre. The tikka is offered as a free size piece, the chain and hook adjusting to most hair thicknesses. The brass base ages gracefully and resists everyday handling, making this a piece one reaches for again and again.
