Description

The crescent has always been a gesture of longing in Indian ornament, and here it is rendered in the language of Jaipur's most celebrated double craft. Kundan and Meenakari rarely exist apart in the Jaipur tradition: the former faces outward, the latter turns inward, and together they make a piece that is as considered from the reverse as from the front. This maang tikka follows that grammar faithfully. The crescent silhouette is set with flat-foiled Kundan stones in your choice of deep red or forest green, each colour chosen to complement the corresponding enamel work that blooms behind the setting in the Meenakari tradition of the Rajasthani ateliers. Slender bead drops fall from the lower arc, lending the piece its characteristic sway. The base metal is brass, finished to receive the enamel and stone work without compromise. The piece measures 7 inches in length by 1.9 inches in width (approximately 17.8 cm by 4.8 cm) and weighs a considered 23 grams. For a silk chanderi kurta at a mehendi, the green colourway reads against ivory with quiet authority. For a velvet or brocade lehenga at a wedding reception, the red version holds its own against the richest of grounds. A single free-size fitting suits most parting widths. The chain and hook closure is straightforward to secure. At 23 grams, the weight is present but not burdensome, and the brass base keeps the piece resilient through an evening's wear.
