Description

There are maang tikkas that sit on the forehead; and then there are the ones that feel like a small inheritance. This piece is worked in the Kundan tradition, where a brass base is set by hand with flat-foiled stones held in place by fine gold-tinted metal borders. The central motif is a rounded medallion, its face tessellated with closely packed coloured stones in either a deep forest green or a rich ceremonial red, each shade lending the piece an entirely different mood. Below the medallion, a row of bead drops descends in measured cadence, catching light at the hem. At roughly 6.2 inches in length and 1 inch in width (approximately 15.7 cm by 2.5 cm), the tikka follows the long, chain-led silhouette common to Rajasthani workshop traditions, where the parting chain is as much a part of the ornament as the pendant itself. The whole piece weighs just 12 grams, a figure that speaks to considered proportions. Worn with a silk tissue lehenga for a wedding sangeet, it reads as quietly ceremonial. Paired with a cotton mul kurta and the hair loosely braided, the same tikka becomes something altogether more everyday, almost poetic in its restraint. The free size chain adjusts easily along the parting and the lobster clasp sits secure without pulling the hair. The brass base is finished to resist tarnishing under ordinary use, making this a piece one reaches for without particular ceremony.
