Description
There are occasions when an ornament carries the weight of an entire tradition on a single pin. This kalangi is designed around the bridal sarpech convention of North India, where a jewelled plume once crowned turbans and veils alike. Set across a brass silver alloy frame, uncut Polki stones are laid flat in the traditional manner, each facet left raw so that candlelight and daylight bend through them differently. The setting holds the stones without overwhelming them, allowing the characteristic grey-white lustre of uncut diamond-style Polki to read clearly against the oxidised base. Suspended below the main body, a cascade of pearl drop danglers extends the piece to a generous four and a half inches in height and four inches in width (approximately eleven and a half centimetres by ten centimetres), lending it the ceremonial scale that bridal dressing demands. The silhouette echoes Jaipur's long tradition of Polki bridal work, where the karigar's discipline lies not in cutting the stone but in honouring its natural form. Pin this to the hair at the crown or slightly forward on a silk dupatta fold for a Nikah, Anand Karaj or Hindu wedding ceremony. It sits equally well against a heavily worked Benarasi or a plain ivory silk, because the piece itself is the statement. The free-size pin fastening suits most hair thicknesses and dupatta weights without slipping. The brass silver alloy construction keeps the piece lighter than solid gold work, making a full day of wear manageable rather than effortful.
