Description

There are forehead ornaments, and then there are the ones that make a gathering pause. This Polki maang tikka is worked in brass and finished in the manner Jaipur's lacquer craftsmen have kept alive for generations: uncut Polki stones set flat against a foiled base, their uneven facets catching light the way cut diamonds never quite do. The central pendant reads as a medallion, approximately 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) long and 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) wide, its silhouette spreading in a layered floral or stellate form weighted with the authority of old Rajput jewellery. Lacquer work fills the reverse, sealing and stabilising the setting, while the brass base lends warmth and durability at a weight of 26 grams, substantial enough to drape with presence but not so heavy as to pull. For a wedding reception, set it against a deep burgundy or ivory silk saree, allowing the Polki's cool silver-toned shimmer to anchor the brow. For a festive puja gathering, pair it with a chanderi kurta in ochre or forest green and let the tikka carry the jewellery. The chain slides through the hair on a free-size fitting, adjustable for most parting widths. At 26 grams, it sits securely without the discomfort of heavier bridal pieces. The brass construction resists everyday wear well; store it away from moisture and the lacquer finish will hold its colour through many seasons of use.
