Description

There are jewels that travel, and the passa is one of them. Rooted in the Mughal tradition of the matha patti and its side-swept variant, the passa was designed to drape from the centre parting of the hair down to the temple, its pendant weight giving it that slow, ceremonial swing that no other ornament quite replicates. This piece, worked in brass, carries the warm, antique-gold tone that the metal develops so gracefully, making it an honest and unpretentious alternative to heavier fine pieces. At fifty grams it has real presence on the body, the kind of weight that reminds the wearer she is adorned. The surface articulation, typical of pieces fashioned in the Rajasthani ateliers where brass jewellery-making has long flourished alongside the grander Kundan and Meenakari traditions, suggests layered petals, geometric repeats, or floral medallions, forms drawn from centuries of courtly adornment rendered here in an accessible, enduring metal. For a bride choosing her mehendi or haldi look, this passa pairs beautifully with an ochre or ivory raw-silk suit. For festive evenings, let it accompany a deep-bordered cotton or tissue saree with hair pinned low to allow the piece its full sweep. The passa is free size, designed to be pinned into a braid or fixed along a parting with its accompanying hook or chain. The brass finish requires only gentle, dry storage to retain its lustre across years of considered wearing.
