Description

There are maang tikkas that sit on the head, and there are those that speak for it. This piece belongs to the second kind. Worked in brass and finished in the Rajput tradition of Meenakari, its central pendant is a flattened, layered form inset with uncut Polki stones whose raw, foil-backed facets hold light the way old mirrors do: incompletely, beautifully. The enamel work, in white, fills the surrounding lattice with the quiet opacity that distinguishes fired Meenakari from mere paint. Jaipur's ateliers have long paired these two techniques, Polki and Meenakari, on bridal and ceremonial pieces precisely because each flatters the other: the stone's gleam against the enamel's matte depth. From the pendant, a cluster of freshwater pearl drops descends, their organic irregularity softening what might otherwise read as formal. The full piece measures 4.6 inches in height (approximately 11.7 cm) and 2 inches in width (approximately 5 cm), and weighs a grounded 30 grams. Wear it with a silk tissue lehenga for a sangeet, where it will anchor an otherwise fluid silhouette. It works equally well against a brocade or chanderi sari at a daytime mehendi, the white enamel reading clean against colour-saturated textiles. The chain hook is adjustable to most partings, and the free size fits comfortably for extended wear. Brass, as a base metal, gives the piece its reassuring weight and holds the enamel setting without the fragility of lighter alloys.
