Description
There is something lunar about a crescent worn at the parting of the hair. This maang tikka is shaped as a slender crescent, a motif long associated with the adornment vocabulary of Rajput and Mughal courts, rendered here in the Kundan style with uncut Polki stones set into a brass base. The Kundan technique involves pressing stones into a framework of refined foil-backed settings, each facet held flush by fine gold-tone wire so that the light catches it from every angle. Polki, the oldest form of diamond-cut tradition on the subcontinent, here refers to flat, uncut stones that retain the natural texture of the raw mineral. The result is a piece that carries the weight of Jaipur's karigar tradition without requiring precious-metal spending. The tikka measures approximately ten centimetres in length and just under four centimetres in width (4 inches by 1.5 inches), and weighs a composed sixteen grams, substantial enough to feel present without pulling at the parting. Wear it at a mehndi ceremony threaded through a low bun wrapped in a silk dupatta, or paired with a tissue-silk kurta at a winter sangeet where it becomes the single statement the rest of the look defers to. Either way, it reads as considered, never costumed. The piece is free size, as all maang tikkas are, adjusting to the chain length at the parting. The brass base keeps the silhouette stable through hours of wear, and the Kundan-style setting requires no special cleaning beyond a soft dry cloth.
