Description
There are bridal sets that announce themselves, and there are those that simply arrive, composed and certain. This Kundan-studded ensemble belongs to the Rajasthani tradition of setting uncut, foil-backed stones into a gold-toned base, here realised in brass finished to a warm, lustrous depth. The technique, practised by Jaipur's Kundan karigars across generations, involves pressing each stone into a pliant lac core and then edging it with refined metal foils so that the gem appears to float within its setting. The flat, opaque brilliance this creates is unmistakable, and it reads beautifully at distance, which is precisely what a bridal piece demands. The set is comprehensive: a choker measuring approximately 7.6 cm in length and 12.7 cm in width, carried by an adjustable dori; earrings with chains reaching around 7.9 cm; a mathapatti spanning roughly 27.9 cm across the forehead; a maang tikka at approximately 12.7 cm; and a hathphool extending 11.4 cm from wrist to finger. The full set weighs 225 grams. Worn together over a deep-red Banarasi silk lehenga for a wedding ceremony, the ensemble answers the fabric's own density with equal authority. Worn partially, the mathapatti and choker alone dress a pastel tissue gharara for a mehndi or sangeet. Each piece is free size, with the choker dori allowing easy adjustment across different necklines. The brass base keeps the set lighter than gold alternatives and straightforward to store flat, wrapped in cloth, between occasions.
