Description

A bird caught mid-flight, set in glass and gold, suspended at the parting of the hair. Rooted in the Kundan tradition that flourished in the workshops of Rajasthan, this maang tikka is built on a brass base worked into a slender pendant form, measuring four inches in height and one inch in width (approximately ten centimetres by two and a half centimetres). The bird motif at its centre is rendered in the Kundan technique: flat, foil-backed glass stones pressed into a lac-filled setting, their edges sealed by refined gold-toned metal surrounds that hold each piece firmly in place. The result is a surface that reads as luminous and weighted at once. Brass, long the working metal of traditional jewellery-makers across North India, gives the piece its warmth and its satisfying nine-gram heft, without the fragility of finer alloys. Wear it pinned into a loose braid for a mehendi ceremony, where it catches the afternoon light against marigold and ivory. It sits equally well at the centre parting of a silk sari blouse at a winter wedding, drawing the eye upward with quiet authority. The tikka is free size, secured by the standard pin-and-chain mechanism that rests discreetly through the hair. At nine grams it is light enough for several hours of wear without pull or fatigue. The brass base, finished in polished gold tone, resists tarnish well with routine care and a soft cloth.
