Description

There are necklaces, and then there are necklaces that carry the memory of a court. The Kalangi takes its name from the plume ornament once reserved for Mughal nobility, and here that regal vocabulary is translated into brass with a seriousness of intent. Brass, chosen deliberately and not apologetically, has a warmth that gold-toned finishes cannot replicate; it oxidises gently at the edges, lending the piece that quality of something inherited rather than merely purchased. The motif speaks the language of the turra, the feathered crest, rendered in layered metalwork with the kind of dimensional presence that flat casting never achieves. At thirty-two grams, the necklace has genuine weight on the collarbone, the sort that registers as presence rather than burden. It belongs to a lineage of statement jewellery rooted in the ateliers of Rajasthan, where brass was never the poor relation of gold but a medium with its own dignity. Wear it over an ivory silk kurta for a festive evening where understatement is the chosen luxury, or draw it against a handwoven cotton sari in indigo for a cultural gathering where the provenance of a piece begins a conversation. Free-sized in its fastening, the necklace sits comfortably across most necklines without adjustment. The brass finish requires only a soft dry cloth to maintain its lustre, and the moderate weight of thirty-two grams makes it entirely practical for an evening worn long.
