Behind this piece
Kani weaving takes its name from the small, eyeless shuttle, the kani, worked by hand across the loom by weavers in the Kashmir Valley. The jamawar tradition, once patronised by Mughal courts, produces the dense, tapestry-like floral repeat that defines this fabric. This Amritsar interpretation translates that vocabulary into polywool, making the craft accessible without abandoning its visual language. The woven flowers, rendered in the characteristically precise interlocking technique, retain the rhythmic geometry of the original. Strawberry-pink grounds the composition in something thoroughly contemporary, while the structure of the weave remains faithful to centuries of accumulated knowledge.
How to style
Stitch the kameez with a straight, side-slit silhouette to let the woven surface speak clearly. For a winter wedding or festive luncheon, layer the dupatta in a classic front-drape and finish with gold kundan studs and block-heeled mojris in ivory. For a more composed, office-adjacent look, pair with slim churidar in deep plum and a structured brocade clutch. On cooler evenings, a sheer organza dupatta folded as a stole softens the outfit without competing with the fabric. Antique silver jewellery from Rajasthan complements the pink warmly.
Fabric & care
Polywool holds its shape well but responds poorly to heat and rough handling. Dry-clean is the safest option for preserving the integrity of the woven flowers and the crispness of the jamawar repeat. If hand-washing at home, use cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric. Lay flat on a clean towel to dry in shade. Store folded with acid-free tissue between layers to prevent crease-setting. Press only on reverse, using a cool iron with a pressing cloth. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which will fade the pink ground over time.
