Behind this piece
Bandhani is one of India's oldest resist-dyeing traditions, practised for centuries across the Kutch and Saurashtra regions of Gujarat, as well as parts of Rajasthan. The craft takes its name from the Sanskrit "bandha," meaning to bind. Skilled artisans pinch the cotton cloth into thousands of tiny points, binding each with thread before immersing the fabric in successive dye baths. The result is the signature constellation of dots you see here: saffron yellow and rose pink blooming across pure cotton. The zari brocade flowers woven into this set draw from a parallel textile tradition, where metallic thread adds festive weight to everyday grace.
How to style
Stitch this fabric into a straight-cut kurta and pair it with ivory cotton palazzo trousers for a Navratri afternoon gathering. The dupatta's zari brocade flowers call for oxidised silver jewellery, particularly chunky Kutchi work earrings, rather than gold, which would compete with the weave. For a more formal occasion such as a mehndi ceremony, consider a fitted churidar beneath and kolhapuri heels in tan leather. If you prefer a contemporary silhouette, a crop-length kurta over wide-leg trousers lets the Bandhani dotwork become the focal point without visual overload.
Fabric & care
Hand-wash separately in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent during the first two washes, as natural dyes used in Bandhani may release slight colour. Do not wring; press gently between clean towels to remove excess water. Dry in shade, never in direct sunlight, which fades both the cotton fibre and the zari's metallic lustre over time. Iron on a medium cotton setting while slightly damp, and always place a thin cloth between the iron and any zari-worked sections. Store folded loosely in a cotton muslin bag, away from moisture and synthetic packaging.
