about the piece,

Description

Some silences carry their own kind of beauty, and this suit speaks in exactly that register. Worked entirely in the chain stitch tradition of Kashmir, known locally as crewel and sozni craftspeople who have spent generations reading pattern into cloth, the embroidery here traces its motifs across art silk with the patience that only hand-guided needlework allows. The straight silhouette of the kameez gives the surface ornamentation room to breathe, letting each interlocking loop of thread hold its own visual weight. Art silk lends the fabric a quiet luminosity, catching light without demanding attention, which suits the muted palette of Silver Birch, Harbor Mist, and Quiet Gray particularly well. These are colours that belong to early mornings and considered wardrobes, to women who choose their clothes the way they choose their words. The straight-cut salwar grounds the ensemble in clean, contemporary lines while the Kashmiri needlework ensures it remains unmistakably rooted in craft. Pair it with silver jhumkas and a sheer dupatta draped loosely over one shoulder for a refined festive look. It transitions just as gracefully into formal professional settings when worn with low heels and minimal jewellery.

the story,

Behind this piece

Chain stitch embroidery from Kashmir, known locally as crewel or ari work, is one of the valley's oldest textile languages. Worked with a hooked needle called the ari, it traces its lineage to the Mughal courts, where Kashmiri artisans were commissioned to ornament royal furnishings and garments alike. The craft lives today in the hands of karigar families across Srinagar and the surrounding villages, who coil silk thread into dense, continuous loops that give the embroidery its distinctive raised texture. On art silk, these fluid motifs carry the light with particular grace, shifting with every turn of the body.

to wear it,

How to style

In Silver Birch or Harbour Mist, this suit reads effortlessly as officewear when paired with pointed kitten heels and a structured clutch. For a festive afternoon occasion, layer a sheer organza dupatta over the shoulder and finish with silver jhumkas and a carved bangle in oxidised metal. Quiet Gray lends itself to understated evening dressing; pair it with strappy block-heeled sandals in nude leather and a single statement choker in white metal. Across all three colourways, minimal make-up and hair worn simply allow the embroidery to remain the focal point.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk is delicate and should always be dry-cleaned to preserve both the ground fabric and the raised chain stitch embroidery. If hand-washing is necessary, use cold water and a mild, pH-neutral detergent, working very gently without wringing or twisting the fabric. Lay flat on a clean dry towel to remove excess moisture, then air-dry in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can yellow art silk over time. Store folded in a clean muslin cloth, never in a plastic bag. Press on the reverse side only, using a low-heat setting with a pressing cloth to protect the embroidered surface.
