Salwar Suit from Kashmir with Aari Embroidered Bootis and Floral Motifs
Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin pouch away from direct sunlight to keep the sheen alive.
Description
Pale peach, the colour of a Kashmiri dawn, holds within it the patience of a needle and the memory of a garden. Across the kameez, aari embroidery unfolds in the form of bootis and floral motifs, each stitch drawn by a hooked needle in the centuries-old tradition practised by artisan communities across the Kashmir Valley. The aari technique demands precision and stillness, qualities evident in the rhythmic repeat of blossoms that travel the fabric with quiet confidence. Art silk lends the ensemble a gentle luminosity, soft to the touch and graceful in drape, allowing the embroidery to remain the undisputed focus. The silhouette is classic, composed, and suited equally to festive afternoons and intimate family gatherings where understated elegance speaks louder than ornament. Style this suit with gold jhumkas in a simple wire setting, keeping the neck unadorned so the embroidery may breathe. A dupatta draped loosely over one shoulder, in a tonal peach or ivory, completes the look without competing with the craft at its centre.

Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aar, that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the Vale. Rooted in the royal ateliers of the Mughal period, the technique produces the kind of dense, chain-stitched bootis and flowering vines that once adorned court shawls and darbar robes. Here, those same motifs are scattered across pale peach art silk with a patience that resists any hurry. The boti clusters and floral sprays follow a grammar passed between generations of karigar families in Srinagar and the surrounding villages.
How to style
Wear this suit to a daytime mehendi or a festive family lunch, where the peach tones warm against gold-toned skin. Pair it with kolhapuri flats in tan leather and a single strand of freshwater pearls for an understated, heritage-inflected look. For an evening occasion, swap the flats for heeled mojris in ivory or champagne and add delicate jadau jhumkas. The suit also carries beautifully against a sheer organza dupatta in ivory or soft cream, letting the Aari embroidery remain the clear, unhurried centre of attention.
Fabric & care
Art silk carries the luminosity of natural silk but asks for considered handling. Hand wash gently in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping the embroidered sections away from vigorous rubbing. Do not wring; instead, press the fabric between two clean towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade, never under direct sunlight, which can shift the peach tones. For storage, fold along the embroidery lines where possible, wrap in a soft muslin cloth, and keep away from damp. Steam-press on a low setting, always on the reverse side.
