Behind this piece
The angarakha is one of the subcontinent's oldest silhouettes, worn by courtiers and poets long before colonial dress codes reshaped Indian wardrobes. Its asymmetric overlap, fastened at the shoulder or side, was designed for dignity in motion. Here, that historic form is rendered in art silk and dressed with hand-applied beadwork, a technique with roots in Rajasthani and Lucknowi embellishment traditions. The beige ground is not a neutral so much as a considered restraint, allowing the bead clusters to catch light the way jharokha latticework catches the afternoon sun.
How to style
For a daytime function, pair this suit with block-printed organza dupatta in ivory or pale gold and Kolhapuri flats. For an evening gathering, elevate it with a carved jadau choker and pointed khussa in antique bronze. If the occasion calls for layering, a tailored Nehru-collar bandhgala jacket in ivory raw silk worn over the churidar alone works beautifully as a contemporary reading of the angarakha spirit. Keep the handbag small, a potli in matching beige brocade completes the thought without overstatement.
Fabric & care
Art silk is a woven viscose that mimics the drape of pure silk but requires equally careful handling. Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation to a minimum to prevent fibre distortion. Do not wring; press gently between dry towels and hang in shade. Iron on a low setting with a pressing cloth between the iron and the beadwork, never directly. Store folded in a breathable muslin cover, away from humidity and prolonged light exposure, which can shift the ground colour over time.
