Behind this piece
Aari embroidery traces its name to the hooked needle, the aari, that craftspeople draw through taut fabric in continuous chain-stitch loops. The technique flourished under Mughal patronage and found its most refined expression in the ateliers of Kashmir and Lucknow, where needle-workers built dense floral fields across fine grounds. Here, that same patient hand-movement travels the full length of a banana-crepe kameez in art silk, laying down an all-over lattice of stitched motifs. The result is surface texture that catches light differently at every angle, earned stitch by careful stitch.
How to style
For a festive afternoon, pair the flared kameez with the churidar as presented and add juttis in antique gold leather. At an evening gathering, swap the churidar for wide-leg ivory silk trousers and finish with polki earrings. The net underlayer gives the silhouette enough structure to carry a silk dupatta in a contrasting jewel tone, draped off one shoulder. For a pared-back register at a daytime occasion, neutral block-heeled sandals, a potli bag, and a single gold bangle keep the embroidery as the sole point of attention.
Fabric & care
Art silk and net are both sensitive to heat and prolonged soaking. Hand-wash the suit separately in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, working gently to protect the aari chain stitches from snagging or distortion. Do not wring. Roll the garment in a clean cotton towel to draw out moisture, then dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades dyed art silk quickly. Store folded in a breathable muslin bag rather than a sealed plastic cover. Press only on a low, silk-appropriate setting with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric.
