Description

There are pieces that carry the quiet authority of another era, and this brooch is one of them. Worked in sterling silver and shaped into a slender vertical form, the brooch measures 4.4 cm in height and just 1.3 cm across, a proportion that gives it the composed elegance of Victorian and Edwardian silversmiths' work rather than anything loud or decorative. At its heart sits a carnelian, that ancient stone of warm amber-red beloved across Mughal jewellery traditions and the silverwork of Rajasthan and the Deccan, here set in a close bezel that allows the silver to frame the stone without competing with it. The finish reads as antiqued, in keeping with the vintage character the title announces, lending the surface a gentle depth that new-polished silver could never achieve. At 7.5 grams, the piece has perceptible weight without heaviness. Pin this to the lapel of a raw silk kurta in ivory or stone for a literary festival or a gallery opening. It works equally well fastened to the neckline of a fine wool shawl on a cool winter evening, where the carnelian's warmth reads beautifully against neutral weaves. The standard brooch pin at the reverse makes fastening simple and secure on most fabrics. Free-sized by nature, it asks nothing of the wearer except a surface worth adorning. A considered, lasting choice for those who prefer their ornament to speak in measured tones.
