Description

There are timepieces, and then there are objects that measure something older than minutes. This Kundan watch necklace from JA1812 belongs to a tradition where jewellery and utility were never truly separate. The centrepiece is a watch face framed in classic Kundan work: flat-foiled glass stones set in a polished brass collet, pressed flush without prongs, in the manner perfected by Jaipur's gem-setters across generations. Kundan's defining quality is its intimacy with light, each stone catching it differently as the wearer moves. Here that quality is amplified by ghungroo drops suspended from the base of the watch face, small brass bells that carry the vocabulary of classical dance and temple adornment into something entirely wearable. The brass body is warm-toned and substantial, weighing thirty-five grams, with a fine adjustable chain bringing the total length to six inches (approximately fifteen centimetres); the watch face itself spans one and a half inches (roughly four centimetres) across. Wear it over a cream chanderi kurta for a literary evening or a festival lunch where you want ornament without excess. It reads equally well layered over a simple cotton blouse at a mehendi, where the ghungroo drops will catch movement and sound alike. The adjustable chain means it sits comfortably on varied necklines without alteration. Brass requires only a soft cloth and occasional storage away from moisture to hold its warm lustre across many seasons of wearing.
