Description

There are brooches, and then there are those that recall a prince's turban at the moment a court painter would have reached for gold leaf. This Kundan kalagi brooch revives one of Mughal jewellery's most ceremonial silhouettes: the feather-plume ornament worn at the crest of a sarpech or pinned to a pagri as a mark of rank. Worked in brass and finished with a warm gilded patina, the piece rises to a height of 4.7 inches (approximately 11.9 cm) and spans 2.2 inches (approximately 5.6 cm) at its widest, giving it the commanding presence the form demands. Teardrop stones are set throughout in the classical Kundan manner, each foiled and embedded in refined lac beneath a border of polished gold-toned metal, a technique rooted in the ateliers of Jaipur and the princely workshops of Rajasthan. At 53 grams, the brooch carries perceptible weight without strain. Pin it to the lapel of a raw-silk achkan for a wedding mehendi, where its amber and ivory tones will read against ivory or ivory-adjacent weaves. It works equally well anchoring the drape of a dupatta at the shoulder on a formal festive evening. The free-size clasp pin at the reverse suits most fabrics from brocade to chanderi. Brass construction keeps the piece resilient through extended wear, and the Kundan inlay, sealed within its setting, requires only occasional soft-cloth buffing to hold its lustre.
