Description

Two peacocks, mirror-set in sterling silver, face each other across a conversation that has lasted centuries. The peacock has long been the presiding motif of Indian decorative silverwork, beloved by artisans from Rajasthan's Jaipur ateliers to the temple-jewellery workshops of Nagercoil. Here, the form is rendered in 925 sterling silver, its surface polished to a cool, restrained lustre, with zircon stones set across the spread plumage to catch light in the way that foil-backed Kundan stones once did in a nawab's court. The twin birds meet at the centre in bilateral symmetry, their tail feathers curving outward to fill a silhouette measuring approximately four centimetres in height and four and a half centimetres in width (1.6 by 1.8 inches). At seventeen grams, the brooch carries perceptible weight without strain, the kind of heft that speaks of honest silversmithing rather than hollow casting. The zircon settings, clean and white-bright, borrow the aesthetic vocabulary of Polki without the precious-stone price, making the piece quietly democratic. Pin this to the draped shoulder of a silk Kanjeevaram for a wedding reception, or anchor it at the neckline of a structured ivory kurta for a festive afternoon gathering. It reads equally well on fine wool for winter celebrations. Free-sized and universally fitted, the standard pin mechanism sits flush against fabric without distortion. The sterling silver finish resists tarnish well with occasional light polishing, making this a piece that travels from occasion to occasion with little ceremony and considerable grace.
