Description
There are skies that hold their colour long after the sun has set. This pendant takes the sun itself as its subject, a radiating disc carved in sterling silver with a cabochon turquoise set at its heart. The turquoise, that particular blue-green which the desert regions of Rajasthan and Persia have traded for centuries, sits surrounded by petals of burnished silver that spread outward like light through a latticed jali. Sterling silver, by its nature, carries a cool, assured lustre; here it is worked into clean relief, the rays crisply defined without becoming ornate. There is an economy to the craft, a restraint that recalls the silverwork traditions of Bikaner and Jaisalmer, where artisans have long understood that silver and turquoise need very little embellishment to speak with authority. The pendant measures approximately 3.6 cm in height and 2.8 cm in width, and weighs 10 grams, present enough to be felt, discreet enough to be worn daily. On a white cotton kurta with hand-block print borders it becomes the focal point without effort. Against a slate-blue silk blouse tucked into a pleated palazzo it reads as something quietly ceremonial, appropriate for a festive lunch or a winter wedding day event. Free-size in its fit, the pendant suspends on a standard bail suited to a fine chain. The sterling silver will develop a gentle patina over time, and responds well to a soft cloth polish when you want its original brightness returned.
