Description

There are forms of devotion that silversmithes press directly into metal. The Ashta Bhairava, the eight fierce manifestations of Shiva, have been venerated in temple iconography across India for centuries, and here they find their home in a single, densely worked sterling silver pendant. Each figure inhabits the composition with the controlled intensity one associates with the votive metalwork of Varanasi and the repoussé traditions of Bengal, where silver is understood as a sacred, living material. The pendant measures 2.25 inches (5.7 cm) in height and 1.55 inches (3.9 cm) in width, and its weight of 21 grams gives it the satisfying presence of a serious devotional object. The finish is a deep antiqued silver, allowing every incised line and relief detail of the eight forms to read clearly against the oxidised ground. Worn against an ivory or cream silk kurta at a Shivaratri puja, the pendant commands quiet authority. It sits equally well over a fine charcoal merino shawl for winter evening gatherings where tradition and contemporary restraint meet without effort. The free-size bail accommodates chains of varying gauges with ease, and the 21-gram sterling silver body is robust enough for regular devotional wear without being cumbersome through a full day. The oxidised finish is stable and requires only occasional polishing with a soft cloth to retain its depth.
