Description

There are faces that have been carved for centuries before the word "jewellery" existed. This pendant draws from the stone-carving heritage of Mahabalipuram, the coastal Tamil Nadu town whose craftsmen have shaped rock into devotional and tribal imagery since the Pallava era. The motif here is a tribal face, rendered in deep red stone and carrying the blunt, expressive quality of ancient votive art rather than the polish of courtly ornament. The carving is done by hand, and the slight asymmetries are not flaws but evidence of the artisan's chisel. Red stone from this region holds a warmth that no synthetic pigment replicates, a terracotta depth that deepens in natural light. The pendant is suspended on a simple cord necklace, measuring thirty inches (approximately seventy-six centimetres) in total length, keeping the aesthetic honest and unadorned. The whole piece weighs just 6.9 grams, sitting light against the sternum. Wear it against a white cotton kurta for a weekday that needs a quiet point of interest, or layer it over a plain silk blouse at a gallery evening where the conversation will find it worth discussing. The cord length means the pendant rests at the collarbone or just below, depending on your neckline. One size fits all wearers comfortably, given the adjustable nature of cord closures. The carved stone requires no polishing, only occasional gentle wiping. It is a piece made to be worn, questioned and remembered.
