Description

There are shrines you carry with you, and this is one of them. The tiger nail, or puli nandu, is among the oldest auspicious forms in South Indian devotional jewellery, worn close to the body as both ornament and protection. Here, the curved claw cradles a finely cast image of Lord Venkateshwara Swamy, the presiding deity of Tirupati, rendered in brass with the kind of quiet authority that belongs to temple-town craft traditions stretching back through Nagercoil and the Kaveri belt. Brass, chosen here with deliberate honesty, takes a warm antique patina that honours the aesthetic of old votive pieces without pretending to be something it is not. The brooch measures approximately 5 centimetres in height by just under 6 centimetres in width (2 inches by 2.35 inches), and weighs 19.2 grams, giving it a satisfying, settled presence on the body. Pin it at the centre of a silk Kanjivaram blouse for a festival morning, or fix it to the lapel of a handwoven cotton kurta on a pilgrimage or family puja day. It reads as both personal talisman and considered ornament, never costume. The standard brooch pin fitting at the reverse keeps the piece secure on most fabric weights. At free size, it suits any wearer. The brass will deepen over time with handling, a quality that devotional objects have always understood: the more they are loved, the more beautiful they become.
