Description

A stupa rises at the centre, and two deer flank it in the ancient gesture of the Dharma Chakra, the first turning of the wheel. Cast in warm brass and finished to a burnished antique gold, this brooch draws directly from the iconographic vocabulary of Tibetan Buddhist devotional art. The stupa form, with its tiered harmika and tapering spire, is rendered in careful relief. The paired deer, symbols of the Sarnath teaching, face inward with alert stillness. Brass, long favoured by Himalayan craftsmen for its receptivity to hand-finishing and its golden warmth, carries the weight of this tradition honestly. At 34.2 grams and measuring 6.35 cm tall by 5.97 cm wide, the piece has genuine presence without heaviness. The patinated surface deepens at the recesses, giving each carved element its own shadow and dimension. Pin it to the left shoulder of a hand-loomed Bhutan silk stole for a meditation retreat or a cultural gathering where considered dressing matters. It sits equally well at the collar of an unstructured linen jacket worn to a museum or gallery opening. The brooch is offered free size, as befits a single flat-backed pin, and the standard clasp fastens cleanly to most fabrics without distorting the weave. The brass requires only a soft cloth to maintain its lustre. This is a piece for those who collect objects with a story already woven into their making.
