Description

There are deities who demand gold, and then there is Balaji, who has always commanded devotion in every metal. Cast in brass and finished to a warm, burnished lustre, this brooch renders Lord Balaji in his full frontal aspect: crown raised, eyes wide with the benediction that devotees of Tirupati have recognised across centuries of temple iconography. The setting technique draws from the tradition of devotional jewellery made along the Coromandel coast and in the temple-craft workshops of Nagercoil, where brass is treated not as a lesser metal but as a sacred one, capable of holding divine form with precision and weight. Coloured stones are set into the surround in the manner of south Indian temple pieces, adding the ceremonial warmth of red and green against the golden ground. At 2.7 inches in height by 1.75 inches in width (approximately 6.9 cm by 4.4 cm) and weighing 34 grams, the piece carries genuine presence without overwhelming the hand. Pin it to the left shoulder of a silk Kanjeevaram blouse for a temple visit or a classical music evening. It reads equally well against a cream chanderi kurta at a festive family gathering, where its devotional character becomes quiet conversation. The brooch is free size by nature, fastening securely with a standard pin clasp at the reverse. The brass holds its finish with minimal care and is well suited to regular, devoted wear.
