Description

She arrives with her tongue out, her crown raised, her silence louder than any storm. Cast in superfine sterling silver, this pendant renders the face of Goddess Kali with an intensity that only the silversmith's chisel can coax from metal. The motif belongs to a devotional tradition running deep through Bengal and the temple towns of Nagercoil, where the goddess is not feared but worshipped as the ultimate protector. Every line here is deliberate: the wide-set eyes, the elaborate headdress, the open mouth that speaks of both destruction and grace. At one point five inches in height and one point two inches in width (approximately 3.8 cm by 3 cm), the pendant carries a satisfying weight of ten grams, enough to feel present against the skin without pulling. The sterling silver surface is finished to a luminous polish that catches light the way a temple oil lamp catches the dark. Wear her on a thick oxidised silver chain over a handwoven Benarasi blouse for Navratri or Kali Puja. She is equally arresting against a plain white cotton kurta on an ordinary Tuesday, when devotion is quietest and most private. The free-size bail accommodates chains up to a standard width with ease. Sterling silver at this grade resists tarnish well with minimal care, a dry cloth and occasional airing enough to keep the surface alive. A pendant for the believer, the collector and the woman who wears her faith without apology.
