Description
There are silences in silver, and Tarakasi knows how to fill them. Originating in the filigree workshops of Odisha, this pendant belongs to a tradition that has been recognised by a Geographical Indication tag and celebrated across centuries of Indian craft. Tarakasi, meaning "star work" in the hands of its practitioners, involves drawing sterling silver into the finest threads, then coiling, bending and soldering those threads without solder mass into lace-like compositions of extraordinary delicacy. Here, the motif is a full-bloom flower: petals radiated outward in concentric rings of twisted wire, each cell open to light, the whole form held in a slender outer frame. The pendant measures approximately five and a half centimetres in height by three and a third centimetres in width (2.05 inches by 1.3 inches), and the sterling silver weighs just under twelve grams, giving it noticeable substance despite its airy, almost textile-like appearance. The finish is the natural bright lustre of fine silver wire, unadorned by stone or colour, relying entirely on shadow and reflection. Wear it on a long oxidised silver chain over a cream silk kurta for a contemplative everyday grace, or clasp it close to the neck on a delicate box chain against a structured linen blazer for a craft-forward formal statement. The pendant is free-sized and designed for a standard bail, making it compatible with most chain gauges. Sterling silver rewards gentle polishing with a soft cloth; its weight sits easy against the collarbone.
