Description

There are silences in silver that only a filigree craftsman knows how to fill. Tarakasi, the ancient wire-weaving art of Odisha, reaches one of its most refined expressions in this floral pendant. Karigars draw fine sterling silver wire to near-impossible thinness, then coil, curl and solder each strand by hand into a lattice of blooms and petals that seems to breathe with its own interior light. The result is not solid silver so much as silver made airy: a surface that is simultaneously dense with detail and delicate enough to transmit light through its open tracery. At one point eight inches tall and one point five inches wide (roughly four and a half by three point eight centimetres) and weighing a restrained eight point one eight grams, the pendant carries the presence of careful hours without the burden of weight. The colour is the cool, pale luminosity of hallmarked sterling, unadorned by stones or enamel because Tarakasi needs nothing to compete with the eloquence of the threadwork itself. Wear it on a fine silver chain with an ivory or indigo cotton kurta for quiet, everyday poetry. For a wedding reception or a festive diwan evening, let it rest against a silk or tissue blouse beneath a sheer dupatta, where the filigree catches candlelight and holds it. The pendant is free-size in its wearability and suits both a delicate chain and a slightly heavier rolo link. Sterling silver at this weight requires only occasional gentle polishing to retain its soft, satin finish.
