Description

There is a quiet irreverence in silver that has always attracted the bold. This sterling silver pendant takes the skull as its central motif, rendered here with a jaunty wide-brimmed hat that tilts the memento mori tradition toward wit rather than warning. Cast and finished by hand, the piece carries the cool, dense weight of solid sterling, 7 grams of it, worked into a form that sits at 1.15 inches tall and 1 inch wide (approximately 2.9 cm by 2.5 cm). The surface reads in a warm oxidised tone, the recessed planes darkened to throw the hat brim and cranial curves into sharp relief, a technique borrowed from the antique silver tradition where shadow does the work of embellishment. No gemstones, no gilding: only the metal's own articulation. It is the kind of silverwork that suits a maker who chooses restraint as a form of confidence, letting the sculptural silhouette carry all the meaning. Wear it on a fine sterling chain against a white cotton kurta for an evening that moves between studio and supper, or layer it over a black linen shirt for a gallery opening where the pendant becomes the only conversation piece required. At just over 1 inch across, the pendant sits comfortably at the collarbone without overwhelming a slender frame. Sterling silver at this gauge wears well daily, needing only an occasional soft-cloth buff to restore its quiet gleam.
