Description

There is a quiet authority to silver that gold rarely achieves. This pendant arrives in sterling silver, a material long favoured by Bengali silversmiths and the craftsmen of Rajasthan's smaller ateliers for its cool luminosity and its willingness to hold fine detail. At one inch in height and three-quarters of an inch across (approximately 2.5 cm by 1.9 cm), the piece is deliberately intimate, its silhouette compact enough to rest at the hollow of the throat without demanding attention. Sterling silver, by its very nature, carries a purity that rewards close inspection: the surface catches light with a soft, matte-to-bright gradation rather than the hard glare of plated base metals. Weighing just two grams, the pendant sits without pull or tug, a quality that speaks as much to the restraint of the maker as to the lightness of the metal itself. The form follows a classical Indian pendant tradition, worked to carry meaning in miniature. Wear it on a fine silver chain over a hand-woven Bengal cotton kurta for an afternoon of understated elegance, or thread it on a delicate black wax cord against a Chanderi silk blouse at an intimate family gathering, where it will read as considered rather than conspicuous. Free-sized and fastened for standard pendant chains, this piece requires no resizing and transitions easily between daily and formal wear. Sterling silver polishes back to its original brightness with a soft cloth, making this a pendant one keeps, and returns to, for years.
