Description

There are devotions that need no gilding, only silver and silence. Mahakal, the lord who transcends time, is rendered here in sterling silver with the seriousness the deity commands. The pendant is cast and finished by hand, the face and form of Shiva shaped with an attention to iconographic detail that speaks to a long familiarity with devotional silverwork. Sterling silver, at its characteristic standard of purity, carries a cool, almost lunar quality that suits this particular deity far better than warmth of gold ever could. The surface holds a controlled oxidised finish, deepening the relief of the figure and giving the piece an antique quality reminiscent of old temple hoards from Varanasi or Ujjain, cities where Mahakal's presence is most keenly felt. The pendant measures approximately 3.3 centimetres in height by 1.3 centimetres in width and weighs a precise 5 grams, compact enough to sit close against the throat without pulling. Wear it on a fine silver chain against a cream cotton kurta for daily puja mornings, or layered over a steel-grey silk bandhgala for a festive evening where faith and formality meet without contradiction. The free-size pendant pairs with any chain having a standard bail opening. The sterling silver will develop a gentle patina with time, one that can be restored with a soft cloth. At 5 grams, it sits lightly against the chest, a quiet and constant presence.
