Description

The sun, as the ancients knew him, deserves nothing less than silver. Lord Surya rides here in sterling silver, cast into a near-perfect square of approximately 4.4 cm by 4.4 cm, his solar disc radiating outward in tight, hand-finished lines that catch light the way only solid metal can. At the centre, a single cabochon of Tibetan turquoise holds its sky-and-earth colour against the cool grey of the silver, the contrast deliberate and ancient. Turquoise has accompanied solar worship across the Himalayan and Rajasthani trade corridors for centuries, carried along the same routes that brought lapis and coral to temple altars. The piece weighs 18 grams, a reassuring heft that speaks to the gauge of the silver and the generosity of the casting. The finish is worked rather than polished to a hard shine, giving the relief its readable depth and the motif its sense of age. Wear this pendant on a twisted oxidised silver chain over a hand-block-printed cotton kurta for an afternoon of museum visits or gallery openings. For evenings, layer it close to the throat on a fine rope chain against a silk chanderi blouse in ivory or deep indigo. The free-size bail accommodates chains up to a moderate width with ease. At just under two inches in both height and width, the pendant sits as a strong focal point without overwhelming the neckline. Sterling silver, cared for with a soft cloth, keeps its character across years of faithful wearing.
