Description

A reliquary for the faithful, cast in silver and coloured like a high-altitude sky. The gau is among the oldest portable shrines in Himalayan and Tibetan-influenced devotional tradition, worn close to the body as both prayer and protection. This example is worked in sterling silver, its rectangular form rising to two inches (approximately 5.1 cm) in height and spanning one and a half inches (approximately 4.1 cm) in width, with a finished weight of thirty grams. The front face is set with coral and turquoise, two stones that carry deep ritual significance across the mountain traditions of northern India and the Himalayan belt: coral for vitality, turquoise for sky and water. The silverwork frames these stones in the manner of traditional tribal and devotional jewellery, where geometry and faith are inseparable. The pendant reads as an amulet rather than mere ornament, which is precisely its power. Worn on a long oxidised silver chain, it grounds an ivory-coloured Lucknowi kurta at a festive gathering with quiet authority. Alternatively, layered over a deep teal or indigo linen shirt, it translates effortlessly into contemporary heritage dressing for cultural evenings or art-house events. At free size and just thirty grams, the pendant sits comfortably at the sternum without strain. The sterling silver construction ensures long-term durability and resists tarnish with minimal care, making this a piece suited to regular, devoted wear rather than the occasional shelf.
