Description

She is not widely worshipped, and that is precisely what makes her sacred. Meldi Mata is a folk goddess of Gujarat and Rajasthan, invoked by communities who have kept her flame alive outside the grand temple circuit. This pendant renders her in sterling silver, cast and hand-finished to capture the frontally seated, icon-like posture characteristic of folk deity portraiture. At one and a quarter inches tall by three-quarters of an inch wide (approximately 3.2 cm by 1.9 cm), the silhouette is compact yet commanding. The silver carries a lightly oxidised finish, allowing the recessed details of her form, her ornaments and her expression to emerge with quiet depth. Weighing just three and a half grams, the piece sits close to the skin without strain. Sterling silver, known for its cool, bright lustre, is the appropriate metal here: democratic, honest and enduring, suited to a goddess whose devotion has always lived in the hands of ordinary people. Wear her on a fine silver chain over a handloom cotton kurta for daily devotion made wearable, or thread her onto a black silk cord and layer her with Rajasthani silver statement pieces for a festive look that holds genuine meaning alongside its beauty. The pendant arrives ready to wear, accommodating any standard chain or cord. The oxidised finish requires no special upkeep and deepens gracefully with wear, making this a piece one reaches for again and again rather than reserves for occasion.
