Description

The serpent has always known how to hold its own. In the vocabulary of Indian ornament, the snake is far older than fashion. Nagaland, Bengal and the temple-jewellery ateliers of Nagercoil have each passed this form down through generations, casting the coiled body of a serpent as a symbol of protection, fertility and perpetual renewal. This brooch works in raw, unplated brass, its warm amber tone achieved without the intervention of gilding or lacquer. At approximately 5 centimetres in height and 3.5 centimetres in width, the form is compact but arresting: the serpent's body rendered in cast brass, its scales suggested through surface texture, its silhouette complete and self-contained. At 13 grams, the piece carries a real, deliberate weight. The pin-and-clasp closure on the reverse is a standard brooch fastening, honest in its construction and reliable in daily wear. A brooch this particular rewards considered placement. Fix it at the collar of a raw-silk kurta for a winter literary evening, or centre it on the lapel of a linen blazer for a daytime gallery opening. The brass reads beautifully against ivory, rust and deep forest green. Free-sized by nature, the brooch requires no adjustment and fits any fabric that will support a standard pin. The uncoated brass will develop a gentle patina over time, deepening in warmth, which is not a flaw but the material's own slow autobiography.
