Description

There are figures that carry entire cosmologies in the span of a single inch. This silver pendant presents a sculpted human figure, rendered in oxidised sterling silver, with the quiet gravitas that one associates with the votive metalwork traditions of South India, particularly the fine figurative casting practised in temple towns along the Coromandel coast and in the workshops of Nagercoil. The figure is set with a single cabochon emerald, its deep green held within a simple bezel, the cool stone a deliberate counterpoint to the warm grey of aged silver. The piece measures approximately 3.8 centimetres in height by 2.5 centimetres in width, with a depth of 1.3 centimetres, and weighs a considered 9 grams, substantial enough to rest with presence against the collarbone without burdening the neck. The oxidised finish deepens every carved recess, allowing the figurative detail to read clearly against even layered textiles. Worn on a fine silver chain, this pendant reads beautifully against a cotton Kalamkari kurta at a literary afternoon, the emerald picking up any thread of green in the block print. It sits with equal conviction over a silk blouse at a festive gathering, where the silver's antique tone holds its own beside heavier temple jewellery worn by others. The free-size bail accommodates chains of varying gauges. The oxidised finish is stable for daily wear and responds well to light polishing with a soft cloth when clarity is desired.
