Description

There are objects that belong equally to the altar and the self. The Shiva Linga is among the oldest sacred forms in Indian iconography, and here it has been rendered in carved brass with a quiet devotional gravity. The motif rises from a stepped yoni-peetha base, its surface worked by hand to bring out the rounded contours of the linga in relief, the warm honey-gold of polished brass catching light the way old temple votive pieces do. At roughly 2.1 inches in height and 1.4 inches in width (approximately 5.3 cm by 3.6 cm), this brooch carries genuine presence without heaviness. Weighing just over 20 grams, the brass has been finished to a burnished tone that recalls the devotional metalwork long associated with South Indian temple traditions and the votive castings of Bengal's brass-working centres. No stone setting interrupts the form; the craft here is entirely in the carving and the metal itself. Worn at the centre of a cream or ivory cotton kurta, it reads as a statement of quiet faith rather than ornament. On a silk Kanjivaram or a handwoven Banarasi blouse, it becomes an act of considered styling, bridging the sacred and the sartorial. Free-sized and secured with a standard brooch pin, this piece suits most necklines and lapels without alteration. The brass finish is durable for regular wear and asks only for a soft cloth to maintain its warm, temple-gold glow.
