Description

Shanmukha, the six-faced god, rendered in sterling silver that has been worked with the patience of a tradition older than most dynasties. South Indian temple silversmithing has long reserved its finest attention for the iconography of Lord Murugan, whose six faces, twelve arms and peacock vahana carry a cosmology within a single frame. This pendant follows that lineage faithfully. The face of Shanmukha is cast and hand-finished in sterling silver, each feature given definition through careful chasing and surface detailing. The piece measures approximately four centimetres tall and three and a half centimetres wide (1.6 inches by 1.35 inches) and weighs eleven grams, substantial enough to carry the gravitas the subject demands, yet balanced for daily devotional wear. The finish has a warm, worked quality that speaks of hands rather than machinery, holding shadow in the recesses and a quiet brightness on the raised planes. Against a silk Kanjivaram saree worn to a temple or a family puja, the pendant reads as it was always meant to: as an act of devotion made visible. Worn with an off-white cotton kurta, it becomes the single considered ornament that anchors an understated, considered aesthetic. The bail sits comfortably on chains of varying thickness, and at free size the pendant suits a range of neckline depths. Sterling silver at this weight wears well through daily use; a light polishing cloth restores its lustre without effort.
