Description

Worn close to the heart, this is a piece that begins as a prayer. Sandalwood has been carved into devotional forms across the temples of South India for centuries, its pale, warm grain holding the image of Ganesha with a quietness that metal cannot quite replicate. Here, the Vighnaharta is rendered in relief on a smooth sandalwood pendant, the natural honey-tan of the wood left largely undisturbed so that the deity's form speaks through material as much as through craft. The pendant is suspended on a simple cord or chain that sits at a length of sixteen inches (approximately forty-one centimetres), allowing the motif to rest at the collarbone where it is both visible and intimate. At just four grams, the piece carries none of the weight of ornament and all of the weight of meaning. The tradition of sandalwood carving, long practised in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, belongs to a lineage of sacred craft that asks nothing of spectacle. Wear it against a cream linen kurta on a quiet morning, letting the warmth of the wood sit against natural cloth. On more considered occasions, layer it beneath a silk dupatta, where it becomes a private devotion rather than a public statement. Free-sized and featherlight at four grams, it is a practical companion for daily wear. The unadorned closure and sixteen-inch (forty-one centimetre) length make it simple to fasten and comfortable through long hours, requiring only the occasional rest from moisture and perfume to preserve the wood.
