Description

There are mornings when a groom's turban becomes the sky, and the kalgi upon it becomes a falling star. This brooch is made in the Polki tradition, where uncut stones are set flat and low against their bed of metal so that their natural face catches light rather than refracting it. Here, deep red and forest green stones are arranged in a layered floral and foliate spray, the silhouette fanning upward as a classical kalgi should, tapering at the base where it pins into the turban's folds. The setting is wrought in brass, finished to carry the warm, slightly matte lustre that Jaipur's artisans associate with Polki work on groom's regalia. At 4.2 inches by 3.5 inches (approximately 10.7 cm by 8.9 cm) and weighing 50 grams, the brooch has the satisfying presence of a ceremonial object without pulling at fine silk. Pin it to the centre of a cream or ivory silk-cotton safa for a wedding ceremony, where the red and green will sing against pale gold brocade. It reads equally well on a deep burgundy or emerald sherwani turban, anchoring the groom's palette at its highest point. A single pin closure holds the brooch securely through layered turban fabric without snagging. The brass construction makes it robust enough to be pinned, removed and repinned through a long wedding day, and the free-size fit means it adapts to any turban width or fold style.
