Description

There are deities who are prayed to, and then there are deities who are inhabited by a place. Pillayarpatti, in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga district, is one of the oldest Ganesha shrines in the south, and the Karpaga Ganesha enshrined there, the wish-fulfilling one, carries a particular gravity that devotees have carried home in silver for generations. This pendant honours that tradition faithfully. Cast in sterling silver and worked to a weight of seven grams, the piece measures approximately 3.2 centimetres in height by 2.2 centimetres in width, a compact silhouette that does not miniaturise the deity so much as concentrate him. The surface treatment follows the conventions of South Indian temple jewellery: the figure is rendered in relief, the contours of the rounded form given depth through careful hand-finishing that brings out the trunk, the modak, the seated posture of abundance and benediction. No stones interrupt the metal; the silver itself is the statement, and it is the better for that restraint. Worn on a fine silver chain over a Kanjivaram silk at a grihapravesham or a wedding function, the pendant reads as devotional without being austere. On a daily basis, it sits quietly against a cotton kurta, an act of faith carried into the ordinary. The free-size bail accommodates most chain widths. At seven grams in sterling silver, the pendant is light enough for all-day wear, substantial enough to feel considered, and honest in its material from the first fastening.
