Description

There are birds that carry entire civilisations on their feathers. The peacock has presided over Indian decorative arts for centuries, appearing in temple friezes, Mughal miniatures, and the devotional jewellery of Rajasthan and the Deccan alike. This brooch renders the bird mid-display, its fanned tail arrested in that characteristic wheel of symmetry. Cast in warm brass and worked to a burnished finish, the silhouette holds its own as an object of quiet authority. Brass, long used by artisans across North India as a democratic cousin to gold, acquires in this piece the gravity of something more ceremonial. The form is compact but considered: at 2 inches height by 2.15 inches (approximately 5 cm by 5.5 cm), it sits flush and confident on fabric. At 26 grams, the piece carries a satisfying heft. Pin it to a handwoven tussar dupatta at the shoulder, where the burnished brass will catch daylight against the slub of the silk. For an evening occasion, fasten it at the neckline of a Chanderi kurta in ivory or forest green, letting the peacock become the room's quietest conversation. Free-sized and fitted with a standard pin closure at the reverse, this brooch requires no adjustment and tolerates daily wear without fuss. Brass's warm undertone ages gracefully; a soft dry cloth is all the care it ever asks for.
