Description

Certain birds never stop singing, even when cast in silver. In the temple jewellery tradition of South India, the parrot carries centuries of meaning: messenger of Kamadeva, companion of goddesses, harbinger of auspicious speech. This pendant renders a mirrored pair in sterling silver, the two birds facing each other in the classic dvandva arrangement that South Indian karigars have favoured for generations, particularly in the workshops of Nagercoil and the older ateliers of Tamil Nadu. The silhouette is full and sculptural, measuring approximately 5.8 centimetres in height and 4.1 centimetres in width, with a weight of 20 grams that gives it the satisfying presence of heirloom work. The surface carries the oxidised detailing and repousse-style feathering that define temple jewellery's bold, unapologetic aesthetic, designed originally to adorn deity idols before finding its way into devotional personal wear. Worn against a deep-bordered Kanjivaram in peacock blue or forest green, this pendant reads as quietly ceremonial. It is equally at home on a fine cotton kurta during a classical music sabha or a family puja, where its sacred iconography feels entirely at ease. At free size, the pendant suits any standard chain or silk cord. Sterling silver at this weight is durable enough for regular devotional or festive wear, and the oxidised finish resists tarnish gracefully with minimal care, needing only a soft, dry cloth to maintain its warm, antique tone.
