Description

There are silences in deep colour, and lapis lazuli has always known how to hold them. This oval pendant is set in sterling silver, its form unhurried and classical: a single cabochon of lapis lazuli cradled within a hand-finished bezel, the stone's midnight blue deepened by its own natural matrix of gold-flecked pyrite. Lapis lazuli has been prized across the Indian subcontinent for centuries, travelling the old trade routes from the mines of Afghanistan into the workshops of Rajasthan and Bengal, where silversmiths learned to let the stone speak rather than compete with it. The bezel setting here is restrained, the silver worked to a smooth finish that frames rather than overwhelms. At one and a quarter inches tall and just under three-quarters of an inch wide (approximately 3.2 cm by 1.8 cm), with a depth of 0.25 inches (about 0.6 cm), the pendant carries its twelve and a half grams with a quiet authority. Wear it against a cream silk kurta for a winter evening, the blue anchoring the warmth of the fabric. It reads equally well against the collar of a fine cotton shirt for a day of considered dressing, the kind of piece that earns a second glance at close quarters. The pendant accommodates a standard chain through a fixed silver bail. Its sterling silver construction means it will not tarnish hastily; kept away from perfume and stored in cloth, it remains a piece for steady, repeated wearing.
