Description

There are pieces that do not merely decorate; they declare. At the centre of this brooch sits a sacred bull, rendered in bold relief against a radiating mandala ground worked entirely in brass. The geometric intricacy of the mandala, with its layered petals and repeating chevrons, belongs to a vocabulary of devotional art long practised in the ateliers of Rajasthan and central India, where brass-smiths have historically translated temple iconography into wearable form. The bull, Nandi in the Hindu cosmological tradition, is not incidental here; he is the compositional anchor, his silhouette commanding the full diameter of the piece. Measuring 2.75 inches in both height and width (approximately 7 cm by 7 cm) and weighing a substantial 59 grams, the brooch carries the heft of honest handcraft. The warm, unlacquered brass develops a gentle patina over time, deepening its antique character. Wear it pinned to the shoulder of a heavy tussar silk kurta for a cultural gathering, letting the geometry speak against plain weave. On a contemporary occasion, fix it to a structured linen blazer, bridging the traditional and the architectural with equal confidence. One size suits all wearers, as the pin-back closure is universal and sits flat against the garment without pulling the fabric. At 59 grams it has presence on the chest, yet the balanced circular form distributes the weight evenly, making it comfortable through an extended evening.
